The thirst that you feel can be caused by many different things.

Understanding why you feel the need for water can help you take better care of your body.

Water is essential to our well-being, yet sometimes, our cravings can signal more than just thirst. Understanding these water cravings is crucial, as they can offer insights into our body’s needs and overall health.

In this post, we’ll explore nine critical causes of water cravings and share tips for maintaining optimal hydration. Alongside these insights, the Eating Enlightenment Food Journal App is a valuable tool for managing cravings, emotional eating, and binges.

This app supports your journey towards better hydration and holistic wellness by helping you track your patterns and understand your body’s signals. It empowers you to nourish your body and mind confidently.

For all practical purposes, you can drink as many glasses of water as you want, and it will be good—unless you have to pee too much!

Please know that every single reason listed below boils down to dehydration.

1 – Diabetes

Sometimes, people with diabetes insipidus feel thirsty and have cravings for water.

Diabetes can cause excessive urination (urinating more than usual), which  can be a trigger. If you’re not drinking enough fluids because of frequent urination, then, of course, you’ll get dehydrated!

See how this all ties back to dehydration?

This is why it’s imperative to know why you are feeling the need to drink so much water if you have been diagnosed with this disease.

If your thirst can’t be explained by other factors, a blood sugar issue, such as diabetes, could be causing it.

2 – Too much exercise

When you work out excessively, your body needs water.

Exercise can cause excessive sweating. If the sweat is not replaced by drinking enough fluids, dehydration can occur quickly.

A lack of water in the muscles can also lead to cramping, so it’s important to stay hydrated during workouts.

If your thirst cannot be explained through other factors (see below), perhaps too much exercise could be why.

Listen to your body when working out. No one knows what works better for you than your body!

So take care before starting a new exercise regimen because even though something might seem significant on paper – common sense should always prevail.

3 – Anemia

normal red blood cell versus anemia

Anemia occurs when there aren’t enough red blood cells in your body due to iron deficiency in your diet.

This lack of healthy red blood cells reduces oxygen throughout the body, which makes us need more hydration.

Symptoms of anemia include:

  • weakness
  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue

Again, why do you crave water if it isn’t explained through other means?

If the above factors (see below) cannot explain your thirst, then being diagnosed with some type of blood condition could be the reason.

Please immediately see a doctor if this is the case!

But again, keep in mind that dehydration caused by some of these other problems could also be involved, so it’s important to drink more fluids!

This will help aid your body’s natural healing process when you are trying to treat anemia or any other medical problem.

You may also need medications that require drinking extra water with them. So always talk with your doctor.

Anemia is a source of other strange food cravings, like unexplained cravings for ice!

4 – Too much coffee or tea

migraine headache and coffee

Too much coffee or tea can cause you to feel thirsty throughout the day.

Caffeine is a diuretic, so it causes your body to lose fluids at an extremely fast rate. This is why we crave water after each cup of Joe!

If this seems like the case, try drinking less caffeine to see if that helps with your thirst issues.

But remember—even though you might drink too many caffeinated drinks, this doesn’t mean there aren’t other factors involved (see above).

Also, remember that if someone feels dehydrated from having too many cups of black coffee every day …

Then they should not try to fix their problem by just drinking more water instead!!!

Why? Because all those cups of coffee will still dehydrate them even with the water they are drinking.

They need to do both — put back on their caffeine intake and drink more fluids throughout the day.

This is why we always recommend that if someone feels never satisfied when it comes to staying hydrated …

Then try cutting out caffeinated drinks for a week or two and see how that goes!

5 – Too much salt in your diet

Too much salt in your diet can cause you to feel thirsty.

Salt is a big reason why people get dehydrated – this has been proven over and over again!

Cutting back on salt has other benefits, too.  We highly recommend that everyone reduce sodium intake because it will do wonders for your overall health.

You’ll have fewer headaches, better skin, more energy, etc. It’s a good thing, so why not try it?

6 – Thought you drank more water than you did

Did you think you drank more water than you did? This is why many people feel thirsty even though they are drinking enough.

Our thirst sensation doesn’t always work as well as it should, so sometimes we can misjudge how much fluid our body needs throughout the day.

This has happened to me before, and I’ve also seen other friends go through this! We didn’t drink enough fluids during a workout or maybe while traveling for hours on end, etc.

The bottom line is that if any of the factors above cannot explain your thirst (see this list) …

Then, perhaps miscalculating how much water you drank causes your cravings for water.

7 – Too much sun

Too much sun can cause your body to lose fluids, so you crave water!

Sun makes your body temperature rise.

This is why our bodies sweat (to cool us down). But even with sweating, if you’re out in the sun for too long, your body starts losing fluids rapidly.

This will cause that intense thirst sensation – especially when paired with heat exhaustion or heat stroke!

So don’t forget hydration during those sunny days of summer because it can be as important as protecting yourself from direct sunlight exposure.

You should always wear sunscreen, sunglasses, hats, etc., but also remember to drink enough fluids every single day!

This is very important, so please take great care of yourself and keep up your daily water intake!

This is why we highly recommend that everyone drink more fresh, filtered water throughout the year—not just when it’s warm outside or during certain seasons!

8 – Medications

Common side effects of some medications for high blood sugar and other conditions include excessive thirst and cravings for water.

If the medical companies creating these drugs are listing dehydration as a side effect, then you know it’s real!

Please consult your doctor for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

9 – Dry Mouth

A dry mouth causes you to crave water – it’s just that simple!

Not being able to drool can cause your body to be dehydrated.

This is why people suffering from dry mouth are always thirsty. They crave water even though they seemingly drink enough throughout the day.

They may think they’re drinking too much coffee or alcohol, eating too much spicy food, etc…

But really, what needs to happen is a change in medication or a trial of some other solution so that their saliva glands start working again.

There are medications on the market now that help with saliva production.

But if this doesn’t solve your problem, see an endocrinologist. Water cravings could be due to a lack of hormones!

And why wouldn’t your doctor want you to drink more fresh, filtered water, too?

Quench your thirst and make your dry mouth go away!

Why is my body craving water?

There are many reasons why your body may be craving water. It could be because you’re dehydrated and not getting enough water. Dehydration can cause several problems, including headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. It can also lead to more serious issues like kidney stones and heat stroke.

Your body needs water to function correctly, and when it’s not getting enough, it will signal that you need to drink more. Water is essential for life – we can live without food for 30 days without water for only three days. That’s how important it is!

So if you feel thirsty all the time, make sure to drink up! Your body will thank you for it.

There are a few reasons you might be feeling an intense craving for water. One possibility is that you are dehydrated.

This means that your body does not have enough fluids to function properly. Symptoms of dehydration can include:

  • thirst
  • fatigue
  • lightheadedness
  • dizziness

Another possibility is that you are experiencing a condition called polydipsia. Polydipsia is an excessive thirst that is not caused by dehydration. It can be a symptom of diabetes, which occurs when your blood sugar is too high. If you are experiencing polydipsia, it’s important to see a doctor so that they can test your blood sugar levels and determine the cause of your excessive thirst.

Finally, some medications can cause increased thirst as a side effect. If you are taking medication and have started to experience sudden or intense thirst, you should talk to your doctor about the possibility that your medication is the cause. They may be able to prescribe a different medication that does not have this side effect.

However, these medical conditions and medications are less likely than being dehydrated. As stated before, dehydration is the #1 cause of water cravings.

If you are experiencing extreme thirst, it’s essential to drink fluids and seek medical attention if necessary. There are many potential causes of excessive thirst, so it’s important to talk to a doctor to determine the cause of your symptoms.

What does it mean when you crave water?

There are a few different things that can cause someone to crave water.

Dehydration is one of the most common reasons, as the body signals that it needs more fluid.

This can be caused by too much sweating or simply not drinking enough water throughout the day.

Stress can also lead to cravings for water, as the body feels the need to replenish lost fluids. Not getting enough sleep can also play a role, as fatigue can lead to dehydration.

Finally, cravings for water may also be a sign of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), as many women experience increased thirst in the days leading up to their period or when pregnant.

In some cases, cravings for water may indicate an underlying medical condition.

For example, if you have diabetes, your body may be trying to tell you that your blood sugar levels are too high.

Electrolyte imbalance can also cause cravings for water as the body seeks to restore equilibrium.

Finally, some diseases, such as kidney or liver disease, can increase thirst and water cravings.

If you’re constantly feeling thirsty and craving water more often than usual, it’s essential to see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

Drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day is also crucial in preventing dehydration. And if you’re experiencing PMS-related water cravings, staying hydrated can help ease some symptoms.
