Why Do I Crave Water

The thirst that you feel can be caused by many different things.

It’s important to understand why you are feeling the need for water because this will help you take better care of your body.

Cravings for water are most often a sign of dehydration. However, dehyration itself can be caused by many reasons.

Dehydration is the most common symptom when people feel thirsty and have cravings for water.

When your body doesn’t have enough fluid, your body’s way of signaling your conscious brain is through increased thirst.

If you’ve been losing fluids for reasons covered below, then this can cause dehydration.

Being dehydrated causes a lack of energy and fatigue! You will definitely be asking yourself ‘why do I crave water’ if you are frequently dehydrated!

The great thing about water is that it’s a natural fluid. This means your body knows how to process it better than other liquids.

For all practical intents, you can drink as many glasses of water as you want and it’s going to be a good thing! Unless you have to pee too much!

Please know that every single reason listed down below boils down to dehydration.

1 – Diabetes

Sometimes people with diabetes insipidus feel thirsty and have cravings for water.

Diabetes can cause excessive urination (urinating more than normal), which  can be a trigger. If you’re not drinking enough fluids because of frequent urination, then of course you’ll get dehydrated!

See how this all ties back to dehydration?

This is why it’s especially important to know why you are feeling the need to drink so much water if you have been diagnosed with this disease.

If your thirst can’t be explained by other factors, then a blood sugar issue such as diabetes could be causing it.

2 – Too much exercise

When you work out excessively, your body needs water.

Exercise can cause excessive sweating. If the sweat is not replaced by drinking enough fluids, then dehydration occurs fast.

A lack of water in the muscles will also lead to cramping, so you must keep hydrated during workouts.

If your thirst cannot be explained through other factors (see below), then perhaps too much exercise  could be why?

It’s important to listen to your body when working out. No one knows what works best for you better than your body!

So take care before starting a new exercise regimen because even though something might seem great on paper – common sense should always prevail.

3 – Anemia

normal red blood cell versus anemia

Anemia occurs when there aren’t enough red blood cells in your body due to iron deficiency in your diet.

This lack of healthy red blood cells reduces oxygen throughout the body, which makes us need more hydration.

Symptoms of anemia include:

  • weakness
  • shortness of breath
  • fatigue

Again, why are you having cravings for water if it isn’t explained through other means?

If your thirst cannot be explained by the above factors (see below), then being diagnosed with some type of blood condition could be why.

Please immediately see a doctor if this is the case!

But again – keep in mind that dehydration caused by some of  these other problems could also be in play, so an important thing to do is drink more fluids!

This will help aid your body’s natural healing process when trying to get rid of anemia or any other medical problem.

There may also be medications that you need which require drinking extra water with them as well. So always talk with your doctor.

Anemia is a source of other strange food cravings as well, like unexplained cravings for ice!

4 – Too much coffee or tea

migraine headache and coffee

Too much coffee or tea can cause you to feel thirsty throughout the day.

Caffeine is a diuretic, so it causes your body to lose fluids at an extremely fast rate, which leads to why we crave water after each cup of Joe!

If this seems like the case, then try drinking less caffeine and see if that helps with your thirst issues.

But remember – even though you might drink too many caffeinated drinks, this doesn’t mean there aren’t other factors going on as well (see above).

Also, keep in mind that if someone feels dehydrated from having too many cups of black coffee every single day …

Then they should not be trying to fix their problem by just drinking more water instead!!!

Why? Because all those cups of coffee will still dehydrate them even with the water they are drinking.

They need to do both — put back on their caffeine intake and drink more fluids throughout the day.

This is why we always recommend that if someone feels like they’re never satisfied when it comes to feeling hydrated …

Then try cutting out caffeinated drinks altogether for a week or two and see how that goes!

5 – Too much salt in your diet

Too much salt in your diet can cause you to feel thirsty.

Salt is a big reason why people get dehydrated – this has been proven over and over again!

Cutting back on salt has other benefits, too.  We highly recommend that everyone cut back on sodium intake because it will do wonders for your health overall.

You’ll have fewer headaches, better skin, more energy, etc… It’s a good thing, so why not try?

6 – Thought you drank more water than you did

Thought you drank more water than you did? This is why many people feel thirsty even though they are drinking enough.

Our thirst sensation doesn’t always work as well as it should, so sometimes we can misjudge how much fluid our body truly needs throughout the day.

This has happened to me before and I’ve also seen other friends go through this too! We didn’t drink enough fluids during a workout or maybe while traveling for hours on end, etc…

The bottom line is that if your thirst cannot be explained by any of the factors above (see this list) …

Then perhaps miscalculating how much water you drank causes your cravings for water.

7 – Too much sun

Too much sun can cause your body to lose fluids, which is why you crave water!

Sun makes your body temperature rise.

This is why our body has to sweat (to cool us down). But even with sweating, if you’re out in the sun for too long then your body starts losing fluids at a rapid rate.

This will cause that intense thirst sensation – especially when paired with heat exhaustion or heat stroke!

So don’t forget about hydration during those sunny days of summer. Because it can be just as important as protecting yourself from direct sunlight exposure.

You should always wear sunscreen, sunglasses, hats etc… But also remember to drink enough fluids every single day!

This is very important so please take great care of yourself and keep up on water intake daily!

This is why we highly recommend that everyone drinks more fresh, filtered water throughout the year. Not just when it’s warm outside or during certain seasons!

8 – Medications

Common side effects of some medications for high blood sugar and other conditions include excessive thirst and cravings for water.

If the medical companies creating these drugs are listing dehydration as a side effect, then you know it’s real!

Please consult your doctor for medical advice, diagnosis, or treatment.

9 – Dry Mouth

dry mouth

Dry mouth causes you to crave water – it’s just that simple!

Not being able to salivate can cause your body to be dehydrated.

This is why people suffering from dry mouth are always thirsty. They have cravings for water even though they seemingly drink enough throughout the day.

They may think they’re drinking too much coffee, alcohol, ate too much spicy food, etc…

But really what needs to happen is a change in medication or to try some other solution so that their saliva glands start working again.

There are actually medications out there on the market now which help with saliva production.

But if this doesn’t solve your problem then see an endocrinologist, because water cravings could be due to a lack of hormones!

And why wouldn’t your doctor want you to drink more fresh, filtered water too?

Quench your thirst and make dry mouth go away!

Why is my body craving water?

There are many reasons why your body may be craving water. It could be because you’re dehydrated, which means you’re not getting enough water. Dehydration can cause a number of problems, including headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. It can also lead to more serious problems like kidney stones and heat stroke.

Your body needs water to function properly, and when it’s not getting enough, it will signal that you need to drink more. Water is essential for life – we can live without food for 30 days but without water for only 3 days. That’s how important it is!

So if you find yourself feeling thirsty all the time, make sure to drink up! Your body will thank you for it.

Why am I craving water so bad?

There are a few possible reasons why you might be feeling an intense craving for water. One possibility is that you are dehydrated.

This means that your body does not have enough fluids to function properly. Symptoms of dehydration can include:

  • thirst
  • fatigue
  • lightheadedness
  • dizziness

Another possibility is that you are experiencing a condition called polydipsia. Polydipsia is an excessive thirst that is not caused by dehydration. It can be a symptom of diabetes, which is a condition that occurs when your blood sugar is too high. If you are experiencing polydipsia, it’s important to see a doctor so that they can test your blood sugar levels and determine the cause of your excessive thirst.

Finally, some medications can cause increased thirst as a side effect. If you are taking medication and have started to experience sudden or intense thirst, you should talk to your doctor about the possibility that your medication is the cause. They may be able to prescribe a different medication that does not have this side effect.

However, these medical conditions and medications are less likely than being dehydrated. As stated before, dehydration is the #1 cause of water cravings.

If you are experiencing extreme thirst, it’s important to drink fluids and seek medical attention if necessary. There are many potential causes of excessive thirst, so it’s important to talk to a doctor to figure out the cause of your symptoms.

What does it mean when you crave water?

There are a few different things that can cause someone to crave water.

Dehydration is one of the most common reasons, as the body begins to signal that it needs more fluid.

This can be caused by too much sweating, or simply not drinking enough water throughout the day.

Stress can also lead to cravings for water, as the body feels the need to replenish lost fluids. Not getting enough sleep can also play a role, as fatigue can lead to dehydration.

Finally, cravings for water may also be a sign of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), as many women experience increased thirst in the days leading up to their period, or when pregnant.

In some cases, cravings for water may be a sign of an underlying medical condition.

For example, if you have diabetes, your body may be trying to tell you that your blood sugar levels are too high.

Electrolyte imbalance can also cause cravings for water, as the body seeks to restore equilibrium.

Finally, some diseases, such as kidney disease or liver disease, can lead to increased thirst and water cravings.

If you’re constantly feeling thirsty and find yourself craving water more often than usual, it’s important to see a doctor to rule out any underlying medical conditions.

Drinking plenty of fluids throughout the day is also crucial in preventing dehydration. And if you’re experiencing PMS-related water cravings, staying hydrated can help ease some of the symptoms.
