Food Cravings in Pregnancy in General

Before we talk about food cravings in early pregnancy let’s talk about pregnancy food cravings in general.

If you’re like most pregnant women, you’ve probably experienced some pretty intense food cravings. Maybe it’s a particular food that you’ve never even liked before, or maybe it’s something that you normally can’t resist but now it just sounds gross.

Food cravings are caused by a variety of things, but the most common cause is a change in hormones. When you’re pregnant, your body goes through a lot of changes, and your hormone levels are constantly fluctuating. These changes can cause you to crave certain foods or make you more sensitive to certain smells.

There are a few other possible causes of food cravings as well. If you’re feeling stressed or anxious, that can trigger cravings. 

And if you’re not getting enough of certain nutrients, your body may crave foods that are high in those nutrients. For example, if you’re not getting enough iron, you may crave foods that are high in iron, like peanut butter or dark chocolate.

Late Pregnancy

As you enter your second and third trimesters, your baby will start to grow at a rapid pace. This growth spurt will cause an increase in your appetite as well. You may find yourself wanting foods that are high in calories and nutrients so that you can keep up with your baby’s growth. 

It’s usually the later months of pregnancy when the food cravings are highest.

During this time, you might also start to experience heartburn or indigestion due to the pressure that your growing uterus is putting on your stomach.

To help ease these symptoms, you might find yourself craving acidic foods such as oranges or lemons. The acid in these fruits can help neutralize the acid in your stomach, providing some relief from heartburn or indigestion.

You may also find yourself craving carbohydrates, such as bread and pasta. This is because your body is trying to increase its supply of glycogen, which is a source of energy for your cells. Pregnant women need about 30% more calories than they did before they were pregnant, so it’s no wonder that you might be feeling the urge to eat more!
