Because the Japanese diet incorporates more sea vegetables than most other countries’ diets, they have greater iodine concentrations in their bodies than people from other countries.

But what about too high of iodine levels?

Iodine was one of the last nutrients to be included in the RDA system, and its usefulness was based on the amount required to prevent severe shortages, rather than optimal health.

What factors do we use to rank supplements?

1 – Price: What’s the price of the supplement? What’s the cost per serving?

  • At Eating Enlightenment we value quality over price. However, all else being equal, then price comes into consideration.

2 – Reviews: How many reviews for each product? What’s the average rating? How many third party reviews?

  • We strongly believe in third party reviews. Many supplement companies list positive reviews on their website, but third party reviews include negative comments. We always go with third party reviews.

3 – Reputation: How reputable is the brand behind the supplement? How long has the brand been around? What’s their mission?

  • We believe that a company’s intention is highly important and should be one of your top purchasing decision factors.

4 – Taste / Absorption = What’s the taste? How quickly does your body absorb the supplement? Do reviews mention any negative side effects like an upset stomach?

5 – Perceived Therapeutic Effect = What beneficial effects or feelings does this supplement promote?

6 – Food Allergens = Does the company provide allergen info?

7 – Science / Certifications: Does the company list transparent scientific studies on their website? Do third party certifications test the company’s supplement for quality control? How many certifications does the company have?

8 – Pros/Cons: What are the pros and cons of each supplement? How is the supplement unique? For what situations is this supplement best?

Who benefits most from iodine supplements?

Pregnant women and small children need more iodine than other groups, so they may be at risk for iodine deficiency if they don’t eat enough iodine-rich foods or take a supplement. Women who are breastfeeding also need more iodine.

Who may not benefit from iodine supplements?

People with autoimmune conditions, such as Hashimoto’s disease, Graves’ disease, and rheumatoid arthritis may want to limit their iodine intake or avoid it altogether. Iodine can also be problematic for people with certain kidney disorders. If you have any concerns about whether you should take an iodine supplement, speak with a physician.

Risks, side effects and other precautions

Many iodine supplements are best taken with food. If you have trouble swallowing pills, there are liquid iodine supplements and powder forms available.

Food sources of iodine

Iodine is found in high quantities in animal meats, sea veggies, and certain fortified foods including breads, grains, and milk.

  • Chicken
  • Eggs
  • Dairy
  • Fish
  • Seaweed

Table salt is mixed with a few grams of various salts of the element iodine to make iodized salt (also known as iodized salt). The ingestion of iodine prevents iodine deficiency.

Iodine dosages

Iodine supplements are best taken with food. If you have trouble swallowing pills, there are liquid and powder forms of iodine supplements available.

The recommended daily allowance (RDA) for iodine is 150 micrograms for most adults. However, the recommended daily iodine intake for different groups is as follows:

  • Pregnant women: 220 micrograms/day
  • Breastfeeding women: 290 micrograms/day
  • Children aged 0-12 months: 110 micrograms/day
  • Children aged 13-24 months: 130 micrograms/day

How soon after taking iodine supplements will I feel better?

It usually takes a few days to a week for the body to start absorbing iodine. However, it can take up to a month for levels to return to normal in people with very low iodine levels. It’s best to speak with your physician about how often you should be tested and what your ideal iodine level is.

Next steps

First of all, determine first if you have an iodine deficiency.

If you do, try adding more foods with iodine.

Finally, consult with your doctor about iodine supplementation.
