Ah, avocados. Creamy, dreamy, and oh-so delicious, it’s no wonder that this fruit is one of the most popular foods in the world. In fact, people have been eating avocados for centuries—and for good reason.

If you’re like me, you’ve been noticing an uptick in avocado consumption as of late. Restaurants are adding it to every dish imaginable and grocery stores can’t keep it on the shelves. But why? What is it about this fruit (yes, avocado is a fruit!) that has us all wanting more?

Here are 10 reasons why people can’t get enough of this superfood.

  • Mashed and spread on toast
  • Added to smoothies or juices
  • Used as a healthy replacement for mayo or sour cream in dips and sauces
  • Sliced and served with eggs
  • Grilled
  • Baked

The possibilities are endless! So if you’re ever feeling bored with your meals, consider adding some avocado to spice things up. I guarantee you won’t be disappointed.

Avocados are rich in monounsaturated fats, which have been shown to lower cholesterol and improve heart health. In fact, studies have shown that people who eat avocado-rich diets have a lower risk of heart disease than those who don’t eat this superfood regularly.

How To Tell Whether Food Craving For Avocado Are For Physical Reasons Or Emotional Eating

One way to tell if you’re physically hungry or emotionally eating is by keeping a food journal.

For a week, write down every time you eat, what you ate, how you were feeling before and after you ate. At the end of the week, look back at your journal and see if there are any patterns. Are you more likely to emotionally eat when you’re bored, stressed, or lonely?

If so, next time you have a craving, try to find a different activity to do that will help you cope with those emotions instead of eating.

Another way to tell if you’re physically hungry or emotional eating is by paying attention to your body. True hunger comes on gradually and ebbs and flows. It doesn’t hit all of a sudden like emotional eating does. When you’re physically hungry, you might also notice that your mouth is watering or your stomach is growling. If you’re not sure if you’re really hungry or just emotional eating, try waiting 10-15 minutes and see if the craving goes away.

Oftentimes, it will if it was just an emotional craving. Lastly, pay attention to portion sizes and types of foods you crave when you’re emotional eating. When we’re physically hungry, we usually crave nutrient-rich foods that will give us energy and sustain us until our next meal. When we’re emotionally eating, we tend to crave sugary or fatty foods in larger portions. If you notice that you only want junk food when you have a craving, it’s likely that you’re emotional eating.
