Permanently Stop Binge Eating And Quickly Reach Food Peace

4 Min Video Reveals How She Got Her "5x Binges Per Week Down To 0x"
After Struggling for 40+ Years!

“Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy has been found more effective than other treatments. CBT typically eliminates binge eating and purging in 30-50% of all cases.” - OXFORD CLINICAL PSYCHOLOGY

If You've Done Everything The Doctors Told You, Tried All Their Programs, And You're Still Trapped In Your Head, Self-Sabotaging, and Bingeing ...

Let me blunt with you. Trying 'harder' for the millionth time isn't going to change your eating habits and you know that. Trying net another meal plan isn't the solution. Learning more nutrition info isn't going to stop you from overeating.

I remember going to school but not studying my textbooks at all. Instead all I would be thinking about was food.

What would I eat next? How many calories had I eaten so far today? Had I gained weight today? Should I skip lunch to make up for last night?

I knew my BMI, my resting BMI, my proper macro ratios, and how many calories I burned during wrestling practice. I knew everything there was to know about nutrition, weight loss and dieting.

But none of this information saved me from my urges. It seemed like nothing could ever stop me from devouring everything in sight once my food fantasies had took a hold of me ...

I remember waking up the next morning, still bloated and absolutely filled with self-hatred as I stared in the mirror at my puffy cheeks.

I remember groaning with absolute self-hatred as I stepped on the scale. Hating myself, my body, my mind, life, everything.

I'd start the day off in fear because deep down I was afraid of when the next binge would come. I lived in a constant anxiety. I was always looking over my shoulder (or down at my plate) to make sure I was safe.

It was my mind that was the worst. I couldn't stop thinking! It was like I was constantly at war with my mind, my body and my very being.

Inevitable, the sheer gravity of my bingeing habits would always get the best of me, no matter how hard I tried to resist. I'd be sucked in. It was like food was the only thing I could see, like I was drowning, and I would have no choice but to eat.

I'd lay there afterwards, in a daze, too full to move. And then at some point I would try, again. Try to count, again. Try to eat the good stuff and avoid the bad stuff, again. Try to exercise again.

Every time I failed, I knew it was my fault. It was I who gave in. It was I who was weak. It was I who was pathetic, a creature of pathetic weakness, for I couldn't even stop myself from eating, and eating far far too much at that!

Every time after binge eating, I would go back to square one. I would research more. I would learn more. I would whip myself with the lash of discipline and force myself to try harder....

binge eating disorder cycle of restriction, cravings, shame and guilt with forbidden foods

The Binge Eating Cycle Had Me Trapped Even Though I Tried Everything - But Nothing Worked And Things Got Worse.

It's not fun to be trapped by The Binge Eating Cycle.

I started binging in high school because of wrestling. I had hoped that after high school and wrestling ended that I would change, But things only got worse in college.

My whole life I had been socially awkward. Starting college and being a closet binge eater made things infinitely worse.

My anxiety was crippling, but I was able to channel some of that anxiety into good grades, maintaining a slim muscular body, and appearing normal. That was what I learned growing up from my parents - to channel anxiety into productivity and blend in.

But on in the inside, I was a wreck. I was desperate. And my body and habits were beginning to reflect the inner turmoil of my mind, heart and soul ...

I became anemic because I at some point thought that meat was causing my body to become inflamed. At this point I was barely eating any carbs at all, except before I binged where I would dream about pastries, cakes, chocolates, and all sorts of candy ...

Marijuana and binge eating became my best friends in college. After a day of school, all I could think about was going home, neatly getting a box of donuts on the commute back, the slow packing of my pipe with marijuana, and eating and smoking until my vision went dark.

I'd always been introverted and a little weird. So part of me didn't mind being alone where I wouldn't have to deal with people. But at some point the loneliness was simply too much.

I was literally all alone.

I was so filled with frustration. I just hated everything. My entire existence. I simply couldn't tolerate my life. I hated myself for my grotesque behaviors around food. It felt like the rest of my life would be okay if I could just eat like a normal person.

I even sought help too. I talked with a counselor. I briefly saw a nutritionist / dietician. I tried Overeater's Anonymous too.

I've always been a hard worker. I've always been organized. So you can imagine how I felt when I tried to breathe deep, journal and manage my emotions like my counselor taught me - but then binged anyways.

Or my frustration over understanding the importance of following a balanced meal plan like the dietitian explained to me, but then I would just overeat after our session!

Why? Why? Why?!?

Something about Overeater's Anonymous did ring a bell, however. This was the first time that I heard I would need to go on spiritual journey to transform my food addiction and compulsive eating habits.

In terms of spirituality, I had grown up a non-believer. God is dead, I would think, just like Nietzsche said. Back then I read a lot of psychology, philosophy, and my beliefs were essentially atheistic.

But inevitably, I came across Buddhism, Yoga, Hinduism, and Taoism, and something connected with me. While I respected the Christian Tradition upon which Overeater's Anonymous was based, and the message of Jesus, I just resonated more with the Eastern mysticism and awareness.

At some point I became desperate enough to take a leap of faith.

I remember my parent's disappointment when I told them that I was going to skip my college graduation and become a Zen Buddhist Monk instead. I would go to Tassajara, a Zen Mountain training center located in the Big Sur wilderness mountain range of California.

I knew that deep down there was something I was missing. I knew that I would need to immerse myself in a setting where I could truly face myself. To face the truth of my existence.

Became Ready To Face My Innermost Self & Truth

I Was Desperate To Destroy My Negative Thoughts At The Source So I Joined A Zen Monastery & Lived Without Internet For 13 Months.

Living in a monastery for 13 months and being basically forced to meditate each day was ... nothing short of incredible.

Being up in the mountains, with no internet, and a supportive community around me I could no longer run away from my demons.

I couldn't sneak away into my room and binge. I could numb myself and disassociate with marijuana. I couldn't just lay there in a post-binge haze for hours because someone would have definitely see me and I didn't want that.

In fact, there was little room to hide food because the community would eat three meals and two snacks per day as an entire mindful group. I had to eat nutritious wholesome food around three times a day along with a couple of snacks. This regular eating reminded me of what I learned earlier when I worked with the nutritionist!

Perhaps most importantly was the constant emphasis on mindfulness. Our whole community practiced 10 minutes of silence to facilitate mindful eating before every meal. We were even instructed to walk mindfully and bow with mindfulness before we used the bathroom. We even had to bow to each other with mindfulness when we crossed paths on the mountain walkways!

Basically, there was a ton of supportive accountability and I had to take a face my inner most thoughts and beliefs.

Accountability and being forced to examine my thoughts were life changing. I remember that I quickly reduced my binge eating frequency from 3-4x per week to almost nothing within just a few weeks of joining the monastery.

I Quickly Released My Binges In The Zen Monastery. Here's What Helped Me Shift:

  • Accountability: Without the support of the community there was no way I would have been as mindful, ate regularly or confronted my negative thoughts and beliefs.
  • Regular Balanced Eating: Having people see my eating habits basically forced me to not hide the amounts of food I was eating. Three meals and two snacks were perfectly manageable. Basically there was some structure to my eating which really helped.
  • Awareness Of Beliefs: By essentially being forced to be aware of my thoughts, I quickly saw how distorted and crazy my thoughts were. Previously I had been running away from my thoughts and beliefs, but now I was forced to see the truth. This was much different than my previous experiences with Overeater's Anonymous and working with a counselor, who didn't really dig as deep into my triggers, appraisals, and mental biases very deeply.

But After I Leave The Zen Monastery ... I Simply Cannot Not Recreate My Magical 'Zen Monastery' Experience

Fast forward a few years. I now have my Master's in Counseling, numerous certifications, and I no longer binge. I am starting to see private coaching clients, but when I try to teach them what I learned in the Zen Monastery, I am not able recreate the magic.

I found out that it's one thing to recover from overeating yourself, but it's an entirely different thing to help others do the same.

At this point in my journey I was fully recovered. Although I did have another relapse after I left the monastery, by far the bulk of my healing took place in the monastery.

My relationship with food and marijuana were normal. I had friends. I had gone back to school and was finding my career which I was extremely passionate about! I had a girlfriend. I was even feeling closer to my family too.

I thought this would mean that helping people in counseling and coaching would be very easy. However, I was finding that helping people with overeating was anything but easy.

I wanted to help people experience what I had found up in the mountains. But how could I bring my Zen Monastery experience to the modern day world?

My certifications in Intuitive Eating, Yoga, and Wellness all missed the mark. I would try to teach my clients Intuitive Eating, but even after going through the workbook they would still be stuck. I was giving them ideas and we were seeing some progress, but they weren't experiencing progress fast enough.

I remember feeling stuck. I would speak to my clients about the dangers of dieting, the importance of self-care, and how to have nutritious meals each day. But these pieces of information fell by the wayside whenever a binge came on.

I taught them how to meditate, be compassionate, and every other technique I knew. But again, when my clients felt the urges of a binge coming up they were unable to change their eating habits.

Nothing worked. I loved my clients and they loved me, but they remained stuck in The Binge Eating Cycle. I felt stuck too. The exercises I learned in school and in books weren't helping my clients in real life to stop overeating.

This time period was extraordinarily painful for me. I heavily questioned myself, my journey, my self worth and everything about my life.

What was I doing trying to help people with overeating? What was I thinking that I had the right to claim my style of treatment could actually help people?

I meditated for hours and days. I even took 'magic' mushrooms to help me breakthrough and find the insights I needed to really help people stop binge eating. I prayed, even though I was Buddhist.

During this time period I stopped seeing private clients in order to really deepen my understanding of binge eating treatment. I decided to pursue work as a Recovery Counselor at Cielo House for Eating Disorders so that I could gain more hands on experience with clients suffering from food addiction, anorexia, binge eating and bulimia.

At the residential Eating Disorder Treatment center I broke bread with hundreds, maybe thousands of eating disorder patients, mostly young women in their early twenties. Although these days even guys get eating disorders so there were plenty of guys in the treatment program too.

Our conversations over dinner, lunch, dessert and tears ... along with my experience as a zen monk, graduate school and post grad experience ... is when my karma finally matured. The teachings I'd been carrying within me finally found birth. I finally re-discovered The Awareness Journal, based on the science of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy  ...

Just check out what Oxford's Clinical Psychology department has to say about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy at the bottom of the image.

Did You Catch It?

With The Awareness Journal, You Can Finally Reexperience My Zen Monastery Experience Without Even Meditating And In Just A Few Minutes Per Day!

Now obviously my clients are not going up into the mountains and meditating for hours each day. But why I love this CBT approach to binge eating treatment is because it mimics my Zen Monastery Experience.

See, meditation is very simple. Up in the monastery one of the reasons I so quickly overcame binge eating was because I absolutely had to meditate each day. Now I'm not suggesting that you need to meditate, but what I am saying is that you 100% need to face your thoughts.

I'm not talking about thinking about what your thinking. I'm not even talking about working with a therapist to help you with your thoughts.

CBT about putting your pen on paper and writing with awareness before a binge - because if you write with awareness before a binge then you won't binge.

Write with awareness before you binge.

In a nutshell, the sentence you just read is what treatment to Binge Eating and Bulimia boils down to. You must be able to write before a binge. Maybe you won't be able to journal exactly before a binge in the first few weeks, but within 2 weeks you will certainly be able to write before a binge very quickly.

It's honestly not that hard you and you could do it tonight if you put your mind to it. I guarantee, that if you wrote with awareness before you ate, you would not binge.

Now I know this almost seems too simple. How can just writing before a binge help me to overcome my cravings, crazy thoughts? Why when I have failed before would I suddenly succeed now?

But just tell me something ... have you ever fully committed to this CBT journaling way before? Have you ever fully committed your heart, mind and soul into journaling with awareness before you eat? This has NOTHING to do with calories, amounts of food, weight, portion size, macros or anything like that. I'll talk more about those concerns down below but just answer me something right now -

Have you ever truly tried to journal with awareness before you ate (and binged) on a regular basis?

Most people have tried therapy, meal plans, diets, inpatient and outpatient, Overeaters Anonymous, and so many other things they are so tired of treatment, recovery and their way of life.

But have you ever tried this CBT method of journaling? It's simple. Relatively safe. Not hard to understand. Incredibly simple and not complicated. It's one of those things that can't hurt you. It can only benefit you.

Journaling isn't like a crazy diet where you get f*cked over with urges and weight gain after you try it.

Now here's a video I want to show you where I was interviewed on the Savor Food podcast, hosted by food therapist and expert Amanda. Amanda asked me some great questions about what this whole Food Journaling with Awareness thing based on the incredible science of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is really about.

Sometimes it's better to see somebody talking this whole journaling thing so that you can 'get a feel' for it visually.

And It's Here At Eating Enlightenment, Where We Believe In Journaling With Awareness As A Lifestyle & Spiritual Training Path.

What I love most about CBT is that it aligns with my innermost personality. I've always been a quieter guy. I remember thinking about philosophy when I was younger. Was beauty really in the eye of the beholder?

My whole life I've kept journals. See, I'm not just talking about keeping a 'food journal' here. I'm talking about embracing deeply in the very core of who you are, this idea that journaling can help you shift and manifest exactly what you want in every area of life.

There's gratitude journaling, there's getting your thoughts out on paper, there's getting appropriately high on marijuana like I occasionally do and using a journal to write out all your creative thoughts. I may have done that while writing the words you see on this page ;) How else do you think I would have been so creative and persuasive?!

We're really getting meta here, but that's what journaling can do you. Journaling can truly give you a profound shift in your perspective because putting down words on paper with a pen or pencil is magical.

This is not merely about food. This is about embracing a written journal as one of the key priorities in your life. A practice, a discipline, an art, a muse, a folly, a passion, a foible ... writing with awareness in your journal. Writing with presence. Writing with heart.

When you write, it's like you have a friend nearby. Your very words being exposed on the page makes you a friend looking upon your own thoughts.

And not only that, but a journal is a friend who is a little bit more calm then you. A journal is your own manifested presence that makes it possible to see the same situation in a slightly different light. Write out what your cravings feel. You will see them differently.

Of course there's more to binge eating treatment than just journaling. Obviously food is involved, but journaling as the cornerstone of your identity, daily discipline and spiritual practice is what this is about. Nothing less.

Here's What You Get In The 3-Month
“Journal To Enlightenment” Treatment Program

3 Months Of Bi-Weekly and Weekly Coaching (16 sessions total):

I've found that the first 8 sessions bi-weekly are very important. This enables you to work through any beginning obstacles as you begin to journal with awareness. After bi-weekly 8 sessions (or 1 month), you will be proficient in journaling with awareness.

Then following two months are single session per week. This structure enables me to provide expert accountability, one of the key ingredients in my magical Zen Monastery experience.

About half of my clients continue on longer-term while the other half feel they have learned enough to be independent on their own! Wahoooo!!!!!

Very Simple Easy Meal Structure:

Very Simple Easy Meal Structure: Oftentimes in the beginning it's helpful to bring some simple structure to what you eat everyday. If you struggle with Bulimia and in some cases with binge eating, it's absolutely essential we start here.

By structure, I mean a Personalized Meal Structure for you with: 3 meals per day, 0-2 snacks, with a balanced proportion of carbs, proteins and fats. Please remember our overall focus here is Awareness, not focusing on the amounts of food, calories, etc as much.

You can think of the Personalized Meal Structure as training wheels to keep you somewhat in balance as you do the real, deep work of CBT in the beginning. Do not worry about too much information overload here. Both the journal and any Personalized Meal Structure are limited to essential info only. Overall, The Journal To Enlightenment program is extremely simple.

Journal Review and Infinite Email / Text Support:

You’ll be asked to keep a journal. I will review your journal entries. This is important because I can examine your thoughts with you and help you peel back the layers so that you can really truly free yourself from your mind.

However, the real magic is in you doing the consistent work of journaling before you eat and me holding you accountable. Unlike doctors or other nutritionists / therapists, you have access to me in between sessions via email and text.

Again, this helps me hold you accountable as well. It all comes back to accountability, that's the core of this training program. Between the journal, the clear guideline of journaling before you eat, you know what you are signing up for!

Now it's our job to complete 3-months together and do the work to reach Eating Enlightenment!

In-The-Moment Support®:

With In-The-Moment Support® you can email or text when you are having urges and have a little conversation in-the-moment. I know this sounds crazy, but that's only because no one else is doing it.

But it works. Why? The most critical moment in ending binge eating is being able to catch yourself right before you binge, and to write out your thoughts on paper so that you can detach yourself from your thoughts.

However, this process is very difficult in the beginning and is much easier if you get some In-The Moment Support®! This is not mandatory, but just sometimes knowing that someone is available makes it possible to journal when you otherwise would have been stuck.

"After working with Jared for 3 months I nearly stopped binge eating, but I was setup to succeed after a few months of practice on my own."

"I've dieted and binged ever since I was 13. After working with Jared for 3 months I nearly stopped binge eating, but I was setup to succeed after a few months of practice on my own. While I no longer keep a food journal, I did find the discipline of keeping a food awareness journal before I ate to be incredibly challenging - but honestly I don't think I would have been able to stop binge eating if I hadn't dug deep and journaled before I ate for a few months. After I stopped working with Jared, I just needed a few more months of practice on my own and I finally stopped. I'm seriously done for good now!"

"I gradually stopped emotional eating and can honestly say I am normal around food again like I used to be!"

"At first I was anxious about keeping another food journal, and while there are similarities, it was much different than what I expected because the entire point of the journal is to understand my psychology around food. I would say it took me about three weeks where I was super conscious around food and journaling but Jared warned me that I would feel anxious in the beginning, but that this anxiety would go away after a few weeks. When my mentality behind eating changed, I gradually stopped emotional eating and can honestly say I am normal around food again like I used to be!"

"I was initially wary about working with a younger guy but Jared proved to be the absolute best :) I've tried so many different programs but I had never tried Cognitive Behavioral Therapy before and after I read about the research behind this approach I knew I had to give it a shot. The food journal made me realize how judgmental I was towards myself and how this lead to me self sabotaging myself. After I could see my entire thought process around food out on paper, I just naturally started not overeating. I'm now working with Jared to learn Intuitive Eating and gratefully say that Jared is a the best and a very wise zen master!"

"Jared is right, keeping a journal as just a routine part of life is the key mindset to adopt. Everything else flows from there."

"Working with Jared has been life-changing. I’m just amazed to see how my mindset and perception towards food and eating in general has brought balance to my relationships and my relationship to me. Jared is right, keeping a journal as just a routine part of life is the key mindset to adopt. Everything else flows from there. My cravings have totally disappeared as I can now hear my inner voice and what I really need - instead of filling my void with food I actually know what emotional need my body wants and I am learning to actually meet my own needs. This has been a really fantastic and surprising experience!"

"This morning I looked into the mirror and didn't even recognize myself!"

"I am flying in the heavens as I write this. I just had a major eating enlightenment moment. I've been meditating and journaling throughout this entire program and I'm now able to take the role of witness of my behaviors and watch from my place of curiosity without self-judgment. It really seems like my brain is actually rewiring because I'm seeing food differently and my body. This morning I looked into the mirror and didn't even recognize myself! It was like seeing an old, familiar friend after many years apart. I wanted to hug this woman and tell her that I missed her. And that I recognized your beauty. She was beautiful and confident. And that I looked at her even closer and I realized that she was my sister, my soul sister - she was me! It was though I had lifted a veil and was seeing the world for the first time. I'm just so excited about where this journey is taking me and I'm also proud to say in this moment there is no end. Just here now."

If You're Excited, Nervous, Or Curious Here Are Some Frequently Asked Questions To Help You Understand Exactly What This 3 Month “Journal To Enlightenment” Program Entails

Common Concerns

Is my eating problem bad enough to merit treatment?

You have an eating problem that is interfering with your life and it has been going on for some time now. You know this. If you’re reading these words right now then eating is such a topic on your mind that you have a problem with your food thoughts. You know this.

If you have seen a doctor who has seen many other people with eating disorders and this doctor thinks that you would benefit from treatment, then yes. You have a problem that needs treatment.

If you have family members and / or friends who have been telling you that you need treatment, then you need treatment. Just being honest here.

Denial is worse. Don’t let this problem go on for years when there proven, simple measures that are risk free. In 3 months you can be free.

What happens if I am not better by the end of treatment?

I’ve never seen somebody who doesn’t get significantly better. I offer a significant automatic 100% money back guarantee if your binge eating frequency is great than 1x per week after 3 months of treatment.

Plus, it’s extremely common for people to continue improving well after treatment!

Overall though, if you worry too much about when you’ll stop bingeing, you’ll just be getting in the way of treatment itself. What’s best is just focusing on what needs to be done to overcome the problem itself!

Who will I be if I don’t have the eating problem? It’s so much a part of me. I won’t have an excuse for anything anymore.

Such concerns are not uncommon among those with longstanding eating problems.

The main point is that the eating problem interferes with all aspects of functioning and that without the eating problem, you are much more capable and effective than you may assume!

It is usual for there to be major improvements in mood, interpersonal functioning and self-esteem. You may not need an “excuse” for things anymore. As for patients not knowing “who they will be” if they no longer have an eating problem, there is some basis for this concern as your  true personality may have been masked by the eating problem.

My stance when faced with this worry is to ask you about how exciting and interesting it will be to find out what your true personality is like and that they should look forward to discovering!

What kind of benefits can I expect?

Eating Enlightenment prides itself on objective success, primarily measurable reductions in binge eating frequency.

This one measure is sufficient in and of itself in assessing the effectiveness of Eating Enlightenment.  But then think about all the wonderful consequences!

Let’s remember the proven scientific benefits listed above:

Improved cholesterol levels

Lower rates of emotional and disordered

Better body image

Higher self-esteem

Reduced stress

Improved metabolism

Higher levels of contentment and satisfaction

In addition to less binges and these proven benefits, there are so many harder to measure benefits:

What would your life look like if you no longer binged?

What would your life look like if all the mental energy you spend thinking about food was redirected towards creative projects?

How would you live if you felt confident in social situations around food?

Eating Enlightenment clients report many other benefits, in addition to the concrete measurable reductions in binge eating, such as:

Becoming better parents

Better co-workers

Saving money to pay off debt because they no longer go on crazy binges

Not being shackled by obsessive thoughts

Simply enjoying food with family and friends

Developing a compassionate voice instead of inner criticism

Finding a greater sense of spirituality

Much less depression

Much greater self-esteem and appreciation for life

Overall, the benefit I think that’s most heart warming to me is getting to know someone and see their true personality emerge over time.

Usually when someone is trapped by bingeing, they are a shell of their true selves.

How long will it take to see results?

Jared loves the tools of Eating Enlightenment because of how quickly you can begin to see results.

Often within 1 week of food journaling, a client will experience an ‘Eating Enlightenment’. After another week or two of work, binge eating frequency can go down dramatically.

However, as with any real and deep process, these powerful effects deepen and spread over time.  Clients usually repeatedly access deep parts of themselves they didn’t even realize existed!

Over time, the effects become even more profound, including easier and even more consistent access to something Greater (whatever that is for you).

Progressively deepening over time, Eating Enlightenment often shows up in life as a lightness of being and an opening of the heart and mind that enlightens you, your spirit, body, mind and soul.

What about weight loss?

Eating Enlightenment focuses on changing your deepest relationship with food.

If you are anxious, trapped and restricting food, then you will binge.  And many people who diet and binge gain weight.

In contrast, by ending the yo yo dieting cycle and by reducing binge eating frequency, you quite naturally lose a few pounds without even trying.

In these situations, weight loss just happens as a natural byproduct of changing your relationship to food.

However, sometimes people are thin and yet are terrible binge eaters, or have bulimia! In these situations, Eating Enlightenment treatment probably won’t result in weight loss; weight gain may be more probable.

Again, the primary objective measure of Eating Enlightenment treatment is measurable reductions in binge eating frequency.

There are many, many other benefits like confidence, self-esteem, body image and so forth too - but weight loss is not being advertised here although it frequently does happen as a natural by product.

One last note: In order to change your deepest relationship with food, you’ll need to be willing to truly examine your fear about gaining weight. Oftentimes this fear of gaining weight actually causes weight gain!

What is the toughest part?

There are a few incredibly challenging aspects in working through the Eating Enlightenment approach to food transformation:

Food awareness journaling:

Before you can move onto learning Intuitive Eating, you must be able to routinely pass this milestone which is being able to journal in real time right before bingeing what you are thinking, feeling and appraising. On paper this sounds difficult but possible, but in practice, this usually takes clients a month or two to actually be able to do themselves on a frequent basis. It can be incredibly frustrating, but it’s worth it!

Confronting the truth:

The food awareness journal will bring to light your darkest distorted beliefs, but this is what will heal you too deep down in your soul.

What is Eating Enlightenment?

Eating Enlightenment is a unique approach to addressing binge eating, emotional eating, bulimia, compulsive eating and other food-related problems.

Eating Enlightenment has four different, nuanced meanings:

A gradual or sudden realization where you suddenly perceive food differently. For example, you may hear about how dieting is terrible and eventually you suddenly realize one day how dieting when you were young lead up to your bingeing habits today. Another common realization is that trying Intuitive Eating without addressing your negative subconscious food beliefs will just lead to more bingeing.

A yogic way of relating to food, through which you unite with the divine qualities within you and find freedom to be your authentic self.

A hybrid coaching treatment model that first teaches Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and then Intuitive Eating (IE) to treat Binge Eating Disorder, Emotional Eating, and Bulimia. More info on CBT and IE down below, and why CBT comes first.

A lightness of being and ease around food, body and mind.

How is Eating Enlightenment different from other forms of treatment such as counseling / therapy?

In-The-Moment Support®:

Basically more frequent communication, including optional real time support before a binge.

Simple, Effective Approach:

Many therapeutic techniques fail to address the underlying mechanisms at the core of binge eating. Other approaches such as Intuitive Eating are often too complicated, at least in the beginning.

Measurable Progress (or Money Back):

Many therapy approaches are difficult to measure objectively and do not offer money back guarantees.

How is Eating Enlightenment different from working with a nutritionist or dietician?

There are three main differences between Eating Enlightenment and working with a nutritionist or counselor.

While there are other differences such as the style of treatment, friendship, and In-The-Moment Support®, these have already been discussed above!

Subconscious Food Beliefs Not Addressed:

Oftentimes, sadly, dietitians and nutritionists do not provide the deep emotional and mental transformation work that underpins successful recovery from binge eating and bulimia.

For example, oftentimes clients work with many nutritionists who have prescribed various meal plans.

A client will try to follow these meal plans, but usually will be unsuccessful because their deepest subconscious beliefs remain untouched and unexamined. Then the client blames themselves and their binge eating gets worse!

With Eating Enlightenment, you will naturally discover the meaning of regular, nutritious eating yourself, without a counselor commanding or telling you what to eat.

Very Simple Meal Structure:

3 meals per day, 1-2 snacks, don’t let more than 5 hours go by without eating, and when you do eat your meals be sure to eat a balanced proportion of carbs, proteins and fats.

Oftentimes nutritionists and dietitians get bogged down on the nutritional details, and clients are left feeling overwhelmed.

You can think of the above meal structure as training wheels to keep you somewhat in balance as you do the real, deep work of CBT in the beginning.

No Weight Loss Emphasis:

Oftentimes nutritionists and dietitians have an implicit or explicit goal to lose weight. Eating Enlightenment the primary objective is eradicating binges. This point is discussed further down below as it’s a very common FAQ.

How is Eating Enlightenment different than going to a treatment center?

Location:

At residential centers you have to go there! Having worked at a residential treatment center it's a bigger commitment than 3 months of journaling.

Working with Jared instead of a treatment team,

Obviously a treatment team is great, but sometimes prohibitive costs and difficulty in coordination make treatment teams near impossible.

Very Little Paperwork:

You don't have to deal with insurance!!!!!!

Lower Cost:

Residential treatment can cost $1000 per day, which is nearly the entire cost of working with Jared for 3 months.

Awareness Journal

Do I need to keep a Awareness Journal?

Yes. In the beginning CBT part, a daily food journal is mandatory.

As the Food Awareness Journal is such an important step in the beginning, please do familiarize yourself with the introductory concepts.

I have done journaling this before. It didn’t help then, why would it help now?

While you likely have recorded calories or weight, that’s not what we are doing here. The exact opposite.

Our emphasis is on how your mind works. Awareness.

The food awareness journal makes no mention of amounts or calories, and instead places emphasis on time, place and most importantly, feelings, thoughts and physical sensations like hunger or the sensation of anxiety in your body.

Won’t the Awareness Journal make me even more preoccupied with eating than I am already?

It is true that starting to monitor in this way increases preoccupation with thoughts about eating, but this is a constructive and illuminating preoccupation.

It increases your awareness of your behavior and the thoughts and feelings that accompany it. It is the beginning of your becoming an expert on your eating problem and starting to understand it. And the preoccupation fades after a few weeks.

Do I have to carry the Awareness Journal around with me all the time?

Ideally. This may be difficult under some circumstances but it should be possible. The day’s record can be stuffed into a pocket or wallet, for example. We have yet to encounter a situation in which recording was truly impossible.

For example, you can use the bathroom in a social situation to jot down notes.

The overall emphasis in this program is that putting pen on paper is a spiritual process that yields near magic results.

However, it’s the 21st century and we realize that. You may journal electronically, but remember the overarching principle is to write with awareness before you eat.

What science is the Awareness Journal based on?

The Awareness Journal is based upon the science of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) is the most popular and researched therapy treatment approach for all disorders in the United States.

CBT also has been extensively researched for eating disorders as well.

A hallmark of CBT is self-monitoring your thoughts with a written record, such as the Awareness Journal.

Overall, CBT is very simple and highly effective.

CBT is based on the idea that your subconscious thoughts underneath conscious awareness control your behavior without you even realizing it.

So while it’s possible to eat mindfully or avoid bingeing for a short period of time, eventually you revert back to your subconscious beliefs and self-sabotage.

In The Eating Enlightenment philosophy, we start with CBT because when people try Intuitive Eating first, they usually totally fall off the wagon because deep down they haven’t uprooted their negative subconscious beliefs about food.

Is there any hard science behind Cognitive Therapy?

As for the science behind Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, check this meta-analysis of meta-analysis studies on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy

This synthesis about Cognitive Behavioral Therapy looked at 269 meta-analyses!

This alone is insane!! Most therapeutic approaches, even if they are highly effective, have only a few meta analysis studies, but Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is so simple, popular and effective that there are over 269 meta analysis studies!

Want to know the conclusion of over 269 meta analysis studies on CBT?

“In general, the evidence-base of CBT is very strong.” Silly scientists, they always speak in such boring language!

Overall, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy is well established treatment models that have shown a variety of measurable benefits.

Here is a final example, a “Meta-analysis of the effects of cognitive-behavioral therapy for binge-eating-type disorders” of over 27 studies found that:

You can see this for yourself immediately in the link above:

“The percentage of treatment completers who achieved abstinence at post-treatment was 42.1%.

This is crazy stuff, ladies and gentlemen.

42% of people who completed treatment achieved abstinence.

There are many other reliably measurable benefits including:

  • Improved cholesterol levels
  • Lower rates of emotional and disordered
  • Better body image
  • Higher self-esteem
  • Reduced stress
  • Improved metabolism
  • Higher levels of contentment and satisfaction
